Poker terminology:
- BIG SLICK – In Texas Hold’em, hole cards of A-K, suited or not.
- SUICIDE KING – King of Hearts. So named because in the drawing the king appears to be stabbing himself in the head.
- FISH – A player who loses money. An old saying is “If you can’t spot the fish at the table, *you* are the fish.”.
- FAMILY POT – A pot where all of the players at the table are participating, even after each has had an opportunity to act.
- DRAWING DEAD – A draw in which it is impossible to obtain a winning hand for any of a variety of reasons: an opponent’s hand is better than whatever you are drawing to, the card(s) that make your hand are out of play, or (in Hold’em) give an opponent a stronger hand even if it makes yours. Frequently used in the past tense, since one rarely knows it at the time.
- FORCED BET – In some stud games a player may be required to make a bet to start the action on the first card. This is similar conceptually to blinds and antes, but in this case is dependent on the cards shown rather than player position. Usually the weakest hand is forced to bet.

TDS Staff: Tim Carvell's "Planet Tad" – Colbert News Hub
May 15th, 2012It’s unlikely any seventh-grade teacher today would bat an eye at “Planet Tad,” a comic novel for middle schoolers based on Tim Carvell’s serialized story in the pages of modern-day Mad. This fundamentally sweet tale, with illustrations by Doug Holgate, is entirely unsubversive. It’s charming and entertaining, to be sure. But I feel a little bit sad that a book with the Mad logo emblazoned on its cover can safely be handed by librarians to boys who might never appreciate the invigorating grossness of a Don Martin cartoon.
Tad isn’t aiming for the stars, is what I’m saying. Carvell is clearly writing about an Everyboy, but there’s a difference between being relatable and being forgettable. Tad has no real interests or passions, few close friends or enemies, not even a particularly fraught relationship with his parents.
What does he have? A little sister who pushes him around. Teachers whom he unwittingly insults. Classmates who can’t even remember his name. Tad most comes to life not when relating his day-to-day struggles, but in the short and sharp gags that interrupt the narrative. “Werewolves are badly named,” Tad muses in one entry. “They’re not people who were wolves. They’re people who are wolves. They should be called arewolves.” With a bit of judicious editing, this would be an excellent tweet. (Indeed, Carvell, the head writer for “The Daily Show With Jon Stewart,” is a Twitter aficionado.) I wondered, in fact, why Tad hasn’t embraced Twitter or Tumblr or some other microblogging service, rather than using what appears to be LiveJournal for his entries, complete with little mood emoticons garnishing each one. That’s so 2007, Tad!

Poker argot:
- EDGE – An advantage over an opponent, either specific or subjective.
- LIVE [CARD] – In Stud, a card probably not held by other players.
- WHITE BLACKBIRD – A hand so astonishingly rare as to be unworthy of the opponents’ consideration, e.g., being dealt a pat royal flush in 5-card draw.
- RAIL – A barrier dividing the card playing area from a public area.
- LAY ODDS – To give favorable odds to an opponent.
- BUTTON – A distinctive token held by the player sitting in the theoretical dealer’s position, when a house dealer is used. The button rotates around the table so that every player has an opportunity to be the last to act. Also, “THE BUTTON” can refer to the player who currently has the button. (“I was the button and called the blind”.) Synonyms: BUCK, PUCK.

War News Updates: Is Iran Cleaning Up It's Nuclear Sites?
May 9th, 2012Iran may have carried out a clean-up operation at a building suspected of being used for nuclear weapons experiments within a key military facility, experts warned last night.
New satellite photographs appear to show that unusual activity has taken place in recent weeks at the Parchin site outside Tehran, according to the Institute for Science and International Security (ISIS).
A large stream of water pictured flowing from the building, said to feature an “explosive chamber” for testing, “raises concerns that Iran may have been washing inside the building”, according to the group.

Update: U.S. institute says sees “new activities” at Iran site — Reuters
My Comment: Iran must know that these actions do not build trust or good-will.
